How a Urine Pregnancy Test report is read
- The urine pregnancy test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and is most reliable on a first-morning sample.
- A negative result very early after conception may be falsely negative; repeat after 48 to 72 hours if pregnancy is suspected.
- Results should be correlated with the menstrual history and, where needed, a serum beta-hCG.
What commonly goes wrong with a Urine Pregnancy Test
The practical errors that actually cause repeat samples and misread results, mostly at collection and at the point the result is read.
- Use a first-morning sample. Dilute urine later in the day is the commonest cause of a false negative in very early pregnancy, and a test done before the missed period will miss pregnancies that are simply too early to detect.
- Any line appearing within the stated reading time is positive, however faint. A line that appears only after the reading window has passed is an evaporation artefact, and a run with no control line is invalid and must be repeated with a fresh device.
- A very high hCG level can saturate the device and produce a weak or negative result, the high-dose hook effect. Where the clinical picture strongly suggests pregnancy and the test reads negative, the sample is retested after dilution.
- A positive urine test only says hCG is present. It does not separate an intrauterine from an ectopic pregnancy, and it stays positive for days to weeks after a miscarriage, termination or delivery.
