- Results are affected by technique, temperature and the platelet count.

What commonly goes wrong with a Bleeding & Clotting Time
The practical errors that actually cause repeat samples and misread results, mostly at collection and at the point the result is read.
- Bleeding time and clotting time do not predict surgical bleeding, and normal results do not exclude a bleeding disorder. A structured bleeding history is what identifies the patient at risk, and any coagulation testing should be directed by that history.
- Bleeding time is almost entirely technique dependent. Puncture depth, skin temperature and cold hands each change the result, and wiping or pressing the puncture site disturbs the forming platelet plug and invalidates the reading, so blood is blotted at the edge of the drop only.
- The capillary tube clotting time is a crude test that only detects severe factor deficiencies. A normal CT in a patient with a real bleeding history means nothing and should not be used to reassure anyone.
- Antiplatelet drugs prolong bleeding time inconsistently, so the test cannot be used to confirm whether a patient is on them or how strongly they are affected.
