Waist-to-hip ratio calculator
Enter your waist and hip measurement in centimetres or inches, and your sex. The tool divides waist by hip to get your ratio and shows your WHO risk category. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
Your result
For men, WHO classes a WHR above 0.90 as increased risk.
This is a general estimate from the standard waist-to-hip ratio formula, not medical advice and not a diagnosis. It doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone structure, age or other health markers. Consult a doctor about your waist measurement, weight or health risks.
WHO waist-to-hip ratio risk categories, by sex
These are the WHO cutoffs most commonly cited for waist-to-hip ratio. Your own doctor’s reading of your health, alongside other measurements, takes priority over this table.
| Sex | Lower risk | Increased risk |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Below 0.90 | 0.90 and above |
| Women | Below 0.85 | 0.85 and above |
Questions
What is waist-to-hip ratio and how is it calculated?
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference: WHR = waist ÷ hip, both measured in the same unit. It is a simple way to describe where your body carries weight, since fat stored around the waist is linked to different health risks than fat carried around the hips and thighs.
What are the WHO waist-to-hip ratio cutoffs for men and women?
Under WHO guidance, men are classed as increased risk above a WHR of 0.90, and women are classed as increased risk above a WHR of 0.85. Below those figures falls into the lower-risk band. The cutoffs differ by sex because men and women typically carry and distribute body fat differently.
How is waist-to-hip ratio different from BMI?
BMI looks only at height and weight, so it cannot tell where on the body weight is carried. WHR looks at fat distribution instead: two people with the same BMI can have very different WHR values if one carries more weight around the waist and the other around the hips. Many clinicians look at both together, alongside other measures, rather than relying on either alone.
Does a lower-risk WHR mean I have no health risk?
Not on its own. WHR is a general estimate from a standard formula using two tape measurements. It doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone structure, age, family history or other risk factors, and it isn’t a diagnosis. This tool gives a starting point only: talk to a doctor about your waist measurement, weight and personal health risks.
Run a clinic or diagnostic lab?
Your lab already runs the checkups behind a number like this. HealthFlow turns them into a branded report.
- Every report leaves your lab branded and professional, with reference ranges printed next to each value and Low/Normal/High flags applied automatically.
- Reports and bills go out on WhatsApp from your own lab’s number, white-labelled and QR-verified so patients can confirm the authentic copy.
- If a doctor referred the patient, HealthFlow works out their commission automatically and adds it to that doctor’s Pay-Run statement.
