The gout-risk reference point is the level above which urate can start to form crystals in some people. It is a general reference point, not a diagnostic cut-off, and it is the same physiological figure for men and women.

What is a normal uric acid level?
A commonly used adult reference range is 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL (202 to 416 µmol/L) for men and 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL (143 to 357 µmol/L) for women. Exact cut-offs vary slightly by lab and testing method, so always check the range printed on your own report.
What uric acid level is linked to gout risk?
Many labs and guidelines use about 6.8 mg/dL (405 µmol/L) as the point above which urate can start to form crystals in the joints, sometimes called hyperuricemia. Being above this level does not by itself mean you have gout, and plenty of people with higher levels never develop symptoms. A doctor reads this alongside your symptoms and history.
How do I convert uric acid from mg/dL to µmol/L?
