Ideal body weight calculator
Enter your height and sex to see your estimated ideal body weight from four standard formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi), plus a healthy BMI-based weight range. The result updates instantly. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
Estimated ideal weight
Some Asian-specific guidelines use a lower BMI cutoff of 18.5 to 22.9. On that cutoff, your healthy-weight range would be 0 to 0 kg.
This is a general estimate using standard published formulas, not medical advice or a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle mass, body frame, age, pregnancy or health conditions. Consult a doctor or dietitian before making any decision about your weight, diet or exercise.
Questions
What is ideal body weight (IBW)?
Ideal body weight is an estimate of a healthy weight for a given height and sex, calculated with a fixed formula rather than measured. The formulas here (Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi) were originally developed decades ago, mostly to help clinicians estimate medication dosing, not as a personal fitness target. They do not account for muscle mass, body frame, age or health conditions, so treat the number as a reference point, not a goal to chase.
Which formula is correct: Devine, Robinson, Miller or Hamwi?
None of the four is officially "the" correct one. They were published by different researchers between 1964 and 1983 and use slightly different constants, so their results cluster within a few kilograms of each other rather than matching exactly. Devine is the most widely used in clinical dosing calculations today. This tool shows all four plus their average so you can see the spread instead of relying on a single number.
Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy BMI weight range?
No, they are two different estimates. The IBW formulas use only height and sex. A healthy BMI range (commonly 18.5 to 24.9) uses only height, and describes a broader band rather than one target number. Some Asian-specific guidelines use a lower BMI cutoff of 18.5 to 22.9, reflecting research that health risk can rise at a lower BMI in South Asian populations. Neither figure is a diagnosis: a doctor considers weight alongside muscle mass, waist circumference, diet, activity and overall health.
