A low ferritin result generally relates to reduced iron stores in the body, but ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and some liver conditions, which can mask a true iron deficiency. What is a normal ferritin level?
Standard adult reference ranges are roughly 24 to 336 ng/mL for men and 11 to 307 ng/mL for women. Women tend to run lower because of menstrual iron loss. These are commonly used bands, and your own lab report may print a slightly different range depending on the assay method it uses, so treat the printed range on your report as the one that applies to you.
What does a low ferritin result mean?
Ferritin is the body’s main iron-storage protein, so a low result often relates to reduced iron stores. On its own it does not confirm iron deficiency or anemia. Doctors usually look at the full iron panel (serum iron, TIBC, transferrin saturation), a complete blood count and symptoms before reaching a conclusion. What does a high ferritin result mean?
A high ferritin result can show up for many reasons, including inflammation or infection (ferritin rises as part of the body’s acute-phase response), liver conditions, high alcohol intake, or iron overload. A single high reading does not point to any one cause on its own. Your doctor will usually look at it alongside other iron-panel values and your overall health before deciding on next steps.
