Using the standard range for men under 50: 0 to 15 mm/hr.

General information only, not a diagnosis or treatment advice. Reference ranges vary by laboratory, testing method, age and sex, so always go by the range printed on your own lab report. A Low or High flag here doesn’t mean something is wrong; discuss your actual report with your doctor, who can read it alongside your symptoms and history. This tool does not recommend any treatment, medicine or dose.

Standard ESR reference ranges (Westergren method)

These are commonly used ranges shown for general information. Your own lab’s printed range is the one that applies to your report.

Age / groupStandard range
Newborn / infant0 to 2 mm/hr
Children (under 18)0 to 10 mm/hr
Men, under 500 to 15 mm/hr
Men, 50 and above0 to 20 mm/hr
Women, under 500 to 20 mm/hr
Women, 50 and above0 to 30 mm/hr

This checker uses the children’s range for anyone under 18 and does not separately compute the tighter newborn/infant range shown above; pediatric results should always be read by a doctor. Some laboratories and clinical guidelines use slightly different cutoffs, so treat these as commonly cited figures, not a universal standard.

Questions

What is a normal ESR level?

For adults, a commonly used Westergren reference range is 0 to 15 mm/hr for men under 50 and 0 to 20 mm/hr for women under 50. The accepted upper limit rises with age for both sexes. Labs vary a little by method and equipment, so the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

Why does the ESR normal range go up with age?

ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) tends to rise gradually as people get older, even without any illness, so most labs use a higher accepted upper limit past age 50. This checker applies that age split automatically once you enter your age and sex. It is a general pattern, not a rule that fits every individual.

What does a high ESR mean?

A raised ESR is a non-specific marker: it can go up with infection, inflammation, autoimmune conditions, pregnancy, or several other causes, and it does not point to one diagnosis on its own. This tool only flags whether your number falls inside the standard range. Any high or unusually low result should be discussed with your doctor alongside your symptoms and other tests.
