BMR calculator

Enter your age, sex, height and weight to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate, the calories your body burns at complete rest. Uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, with the Harris-Benedict equation shown alongside for comparison. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

Estimated BMR

Mifflin-St Jeor (recommended) 0 kcal / day at complete rest
Harris-Benedict (alternative)0
Difference between the two0

This is a general estimate from standard formulas, not medical advice. BMR also varies with muscle mass, health conditions, genetics and other factors these equations cannot capture, and it is not the same as your total daily calorie need. Consult a doctor or registered dietitian before making changes to your diet or activity based on this number.

Mifflin-St Jeor vs Harris-Benedict

Both formulas use the same four inputs (age, sex, height, weight) but were derived from different study populations and years, so they rarely give the exact same number.

FormulaPublishedNote
Mifflin-St Jeor1990Generally considered more accurate for most adults today; used as the primary result above.
Harris-Benedict (revised)1984 revisionOlder equation, tends to estimate slightly higher for many people; shown for comparison.

Common questions

What is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)?

BMR is an estimate of how many calories your body uses in a day just to keep basic functions running: breathing, circulation, cell repair and organ function, at complete rest. It does not include the calories used for walking, exercise or digesting food. It is a starting point for understanding energy needs, not a measured value from a blood test or scan.

What is the difference between the Mifflin-St Jeor and Harris-Benedict formulas?

Both estimate BMR from age, sex, height and weight, but they were built from different study populations. Mifflin-St Jeor (1990) is newer and is generally considered more accurate for most people today, which is why it is shown as the primary result here. Harris-Benedict (revised 1984) tends to run slightly higher for many people and is shown alongside it for comparison. Neither is exact for every individual.

Is BMR the same as the calories I should eat every day?

No. BMR only covers calories used at complete rest. Your actual daily calorie need (sometimes called TDEE, total daily energy expenditure) adds activity, exercise and daily movement on top of BMR, and is usually meaningfully higher than the BMR number alone. This tool estimates BMR only. For a target daily calorie or diet plan, talk to a doctor or registered dietitian.
