FAQ
Do I need to fast for a blood test?
It depends on the test. Sugar and lipid related tests like fasting glucose, the lipid profile and fasting insulin usually need 8 to 12 hours without food. Most other common tests, such as CBC, thyroid, kidney function and vitamin levels, do not need fasting at all. Use the checker above for the specific test on your prescription, and confirm with your lab since exact protocols can vary slightly.
Can I drink water while fasting for a blood test?
Yes. Plain water is fine, and most labs encourage it because it keeps you hydrated and makes the blood draw easier. Fasting for a blood test means no food, tea, coffee, juice, chewing gum or sugary drinks, not no water.
What happens if I accidentally ate before a fasting test?
Tell the lab staff before your sample is taken. Tests like fasting glucose, the lipid profile and triglycerides are sensitive to recent food and the result may not be reliable if you have eaten. Most labs will either note it on the report or ask you to reschedule for a proper fasting sample.
Do I need to fast for a thyroid or CBC test?
No. A thyroid profile (TSH, T3, T4) and a Complete Blood Count (CBC) do not require fasting and can be done at any time of day, before or after a meal.
