What do the systolic and diastolic numbers mean?
The top number, systolic pressure, is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number, diastolic pressure, is the pressure in between beats, when your heart rests. A reading is written as systolic over diastolic, such as 118/76 mmHg.
What are the AHA blood pressure categories?
The American Heart Association groups adult blood pressure into five categories: normal (below 120 and below 80), elevated (120 to 129 and below 80), high blood pressure stage 1 (130 to 139 or 80 to 89), high blood pressure stage 2 (140 or higher or 90 or higher), and hypertensive crisis (180 or higher and/or 120 or higher). Whichever number, systolic or diastolic, lands in the higher category decides the result.
Does blood pressure change with age? Is there a different chart for each age?
For adults 18 and older, the AHA categories on this page are the same at every age: the cutoffs do not shift by age band. Average blood pressure does tend to rise with age as arteries stiffen, so an older adult is statistically more likely to land in a higher category, but that is a trend, not a different chart. Children and teenagers are assessed on separate paediatric growth charts, which this tool does not cover.
Does one high reading mean I have high blood pressure?
Not on its own. Blood pressure shifts through the day with stress, activity, caffeine and even how you are sitting, so doctors usually confirm high blood pressure across several readings on different days, with a rested arm and back supported. One elevated reading here is a prompt to re-check and talk to a doctor, not a diagnosis.
What should I do if my reading is in the crisis range?
If your reading is 180/120 or higher and you also have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, a severe headache, vision changes or confusion, treat it as a medical emergency and seek care immediately. With no symptoms, common guidance is to sit quietly, re-check after five minutes, and contact your doctor promptly if it stays that high. This tool cannot judge your symptoms: when in doubt, seek care.
